Smoking, best way to quit
Question
Have statistics identified the one best way to stop smoking?
Answer
No, there isn't one best way to quit smoking because everyone is different. But the U.S. Deptartment of Health and Human Services did an extensive, 20-year study and came to these conclusions:
- The more intensive the counseling, the greater the likelihood for success. Choose a program where you meet with a counselor or a group several times for support.
- Quit-smoking aids, such as nicotine patches, are effective but work best when used with behavioral counseling.
Here are a few more tips:
- A new medication on the market, Zyban, is producing good results for some people. It is a prescription drug and should be discussed with your family doctor.
- Write down the reasons you want to quit. Without personal reasons, it is easy to backslide. Sometimes it takes several attempts before you're able to quit for good, but don't let that stop you. Your chances of success increase each time your try.
- Tell other people you're quitting. They can give you support and make it harder to start smoking again.
There are lots of resources, such as books, videos and other guides, to help you stop smoking.Start with your doctor or a library or bookstore. Congratulations! Writing this e-mail is the first step to quitting!
